For this site specific set of installations two pieces mirror each other one ‘Impetus: Arrancado’ and the other ‘Lunar: Enterado’

The first piece, previously exhibited, entitled ‘Imptus: Arrancado’, delves into Curanderismo and its profound significance within Tejano culture. This suspended installation addresses the historical loss of ancient traditions and technologies due to fear and the stigmatization of being labeled a 'witch'. During the pandemic, a notable shift occurred as many non-Hispanic individuals turned to these 'traditional' remedies, seeking alternative medicines and cures. This phenomenon underscored the complex interplay between cultural appropriation and the need for a resurgence of ancient wisdom in times of crisis. To highlight the sacredness and protection of these practices, I intentionally withheld this piece's materials list.

In dialogue with this suspended piece, my new installation, 'Lunar: Enterado,’ is like a moon, a reflective counterpart. This floor installation, shaped like a human body, comprises an organic soil base and is adorned with a 'floral mandala' pattern. The materials that are all commercially acquired, black beans, chili flakes, aloe, sunflowers, salt, polyacrylamide, and plastic/tubing, are deliberately chosen for their cultural and practical significance within my gardening and floral design practice. The piece is a nod to the disruptive earthworks of Ana Mendieta, capturing the essence of grounding, connection, and returning to earth.

The title 'Lunar: Enterado' carries a double entendre, playing on the Spanish word "Enterado," which means "aware." With the addition of an 'r," it transforms to "enterrado," meaning "buried." This wordplay is integral to the piece, highlighting the dual themes of awareness and interment, reflecting the knowledge and hidden aspects of cultural practices.

These two (2) installations, created two (2) years apart, are meant to speak to (2) each other. They embody a powerful narrative of cultural resilience and transformation, marking the journey of healing through death and release that has transpired between their creation. Together, they emphasize the enduring power of ancient knowledge in contemporary contexts, celebrating the reclamation and reintegration of these practices.
